The disastrous earthquakes that struck Syria and Turkey on February 06, 2023, claimed more than 57,000 lives and destroyed countless livelihoods. For affected people in Syria, the need is particularly grave. The country has been weakened by the civil war, the healthcare system is strained and the living conditions are catastrophic in many places. Together with the local Church of God Lebanon, Global Care is working to help people in need.
Only thanks to your donations can we stand by people affected by the earthquakes in Syria. Every bit of help is a small new beginning.

Syria trip: the sun is shining, it is dry and dusty. We drive through remote villages and reach the health center in Medanki, Afrin. Here, people receive basic medical treatment with a focus on gynecology, pediatrics, and nutritional counseling. There is also a pharmacy. It is the only medical facility for 20 surrounding villages with 60.000 people. Two-year-old Alia is here today with her mother for a weight check. Five months ago, she was still malnourished and has since received supplementary food. It is wonderful that her weight has now normalised. A gynecologist has been working here since the center was established six years ago. It is important to her to say THANK YOU. “I treat 120 women here daily. Our health center is remote. but it is the only one in the area and important for many people.”

Syria Trip: during a visit to a clinic in Sijio supported by GLOBAL CARE, project manager Beate Tohmé and project manager Marita Dieling met 24-year-old Daniel. On the day of the uprising last year, he was badly injured during a missile attack in Aleppo. His right lower leg had to be amputated. He received emergency treatment at the clinic and was later fitted with a prosthesis. Physiotherapy and psychosocial support have helped him walk again and even ride a bike. He is able to return to his job as a tailor again and earn a living.

Tabqa in north-east Syria: thousands of people have fled here from the aftermath of the earthquake and fighting. They lack everything. As part of our emergency help, GLOBAL CARE has increased the number of distributed tents from 50 to 100. GLOBAL CARE managing director Beate Tohmé explains: „The tents are sturdy and have a solid base. They withstood the storm a few days ago very well. Other small tents were destroyed by wind and rain. The sturdy tent is a beginning and a great help when in need, until they can hopefully live in houses again.“
A small kitchen set and an oven are also part of the help that GLOBAL CARE is providing for people affected by the earthquake in Syria who have fled to Tabqa. Moreover, blankets, mattresses and solar lamps were distributed.

Two years after the devastating earthquakes, the impact of the catastrophe is still clearly visible. Around 70 percent of the Syrian population is dependent on Humanitarian aid. Many of the refugees are still homeless or living in unsafe temporary accomodation, numerous schools and hospitals have not yet been rebuilt, and there is a lack of food, clean drinking water and medicine.
11-year-old Joud lost her hearing in an air strike. The civil war and the earthquake disaster have left their mark on the little girl’s heart. With every memory of the experiences, the fear returns. Thanks to valuable donations, Joud receives help. At a health center, she and other affected children receive hearing aids and lessons in sign language. Joud begins to communicate again. She gains new courage, goes to school again and manages to communicate with teachers and classmates. Gradually, a smile returns to Joud’s face.
Even after the change of political power, the situation in Syria remains unclear. Together, we help children like Joud and stand by people who need our support.

Support in the form of year-long rent payments and the distribution of food and hygiene products are part of the help. In addition to this, Global-Care is also active in reconstruction: many people are still living in emergency shelters or with friends and relatives. Currently, an apartment building is being rebuilt in Jableh, so that 18 families left homeless by the earthquake will soon have a home again.

Samson from Syria explains: “Because of the bread crisis in our country, we are used to going out at dawn to get a loaf of bread for the day. Usually, my son took on this task, but because it was very cold and snowing on February 06, I made my way to the bakery. When I arrived, the earth suddenly began to shake. I ran home! Buildings were collapsing, and everything was happening insanely fast. My house was already in ruins. My wife, son and two daughters were still audible inside. They seemed to be trapped in the stairwell. I tried to dig a way through the rubble to get to them. Suddenly a fire broke out – there had probably been a short circuit. Only my daughter survived the flames. On the way to the hospital, she also died.”

Today we received a visit from Doreen Blüthgen from the local hospital „Hospital zum heiligen Geist“, who presented us with a donation. In the cafeteria of the hospital, a donation box was put up only a few days after the earthquake catastrophe in Turkey and Syria. A hearty thank you goes to all staff members who made this happen together and supported Global-Care’s emergency help for people affected by the earthquake this way.

Pastor Joseph reports from one of the current relief operations in Syria: „We were on site for six days to visit and help affected people with relief packages. In addition to material assistance, it is important that they can process the events they have experienced. For example, there is a girl who has lost her entire family. At night, she often went to her mother’s bed to continue sleeping there. This is not possible anymore – she misses her mother a lot. More than 130 women, men, and children have attended therapy sessions to cope with trauma while we were there. They are broken-hearted, but they feel better because of the conversations and are thankful for the precious help.“

Pastor Joy Mallouh, who coordinates the emergency relief for people affected by the earthquakes in Syria, reports: „a few days ago Pastor Joseph returned from Aleppo; together with his team of volunteers he distributed food packages to 80 homeless families. The challenge is the rising costs, so petrol, oil or food can only be bought in rations. Hygiene items for girls are desperately needed as well. While the media coverage slowly fades away, the people appreciate the steadiness of our help and the regularity of our visits to care for them. Other than material help, it is important that we listen and support them emotionally.
